Rising to 1,886 metres, Puy de Sancy is the highest peak in the Massif Central and the highest volcanic summit in mainland France. Its steep slopes and rugged ridgelines offer spectacular panoramic views over the surrounding mountains and volcanic landscapes.
More experienced hikers can attempt the ascent on foot from Le Mont-Dore, with two marked trails leading to the summit. Allow around 7 kilometres and 500 metres of elevation gain for a climb that is accessible yet physically demanding.
For a gentler approach, the cable car takes you most of the way to the summit. From there, all that’s left is one final challenge: climbing the 864 steps to reach the very top.
Experienced mountain bikers can also tackle the GR4 long-distance hiking trail, a challenging route reserved for skilled and well-prepared riders.
From Super-Besse: take the cable car, followed by a 40-minute walk to the summit, or choose the full hiking route, which takes around 5½ hours round trip.
Your reward? A breathtaking panoramic view.
