Le Mont-Dore, a Spa Town
The thermal waters of Le Mont-Dore have been renowned for their healing properties since ancient times. The Thermal Baths building, located on Place du Panthéon, was constructed between 1817 and 1823 on the site of the former Roman baths. Built in a neo-Byzantine style, it is listed as a historic monument and has remained virtually unchanged for over two centuries.
Le Mont-Dore Ski Resort.
Le Mont-Dore Ski Resort was the third ski resort to be established in France, after Montgenèvre and Chamonix. Its first ski runs opened in 1936, and it quickly became a fashionable destination, attracting many members of the jet set of the time.
The Sancy Cable Car
The first Sancy Cable Car was built in 1936 thanks to the investment of Dieudonné Costes, the famous aviator who became the first person to fly across the Atlantic Ocean from east to west. It was the first cable car in the Massif Central and the first passenger cable car built by the manufacturer Applevage. The second cable car, which is still in operation today, was inaugurated in 1962!
The Capucin Funicular.
The Capucin Funicular is the oldest electric funicular railway in France. Inaugurated in 1898, it is now listed as a Historic Monument. The funicular still operates using its original machinery, which can be seen at the upper station.
